What the Future of Event Swag Looks Like

Swag continues to be one of the key must-haves for clients when it comes to planning events that make a lasting impact. And for good reason! It increases brand awareness (especially if an attendee shares the items with their network or on social media), fosters goodwill, and helps build relationships.

According to the Advertising Specialty Institute’s recently released Global Advertising Impressions Study, 76% of consumers would be more likely to do business with an advertiser after receiving a promotional item.

Over the years, though, swag has evolved from the random "stuff we all get" (and might end up throwing away, yikes!) at events like trade shows and conferences to more sustainable, personalized, and cooler items that we actually want and will use.

While there’s still a spot for promotional items, gone are the days of disposable pens, chintzy back scratchers, or random stress balls. Instead, think of more useful takeaways, experiential kits, and wearable merch that continue to tell your event story. Here, we’re taking a look at where event swag is headed and how you can make it even more meaningful and memorable for your attendees in 2026:

Interactive Stations

At the marketing and technology conference POSSIBLE in 2025, SEQ client GumGum handed out "survival kits.” Instead of passive giveaways, attendees were able to choose their own Miami essentials like deodorant, eye masks, and stain wipes. The build-your-own format turned a quick brand touchpoint into a memorable mini-experience, with over 500 kits claimed before stock ran out.

In 2026, with an updated brand-aligned approach, GumGum hosted its "Match Market" experience at the same annual conference. Attendees were asked to scan a QR code and answer some questions to determine their mood: Focused, Relaxed, or Curious. Based on their responses, they received customized swag picks including mood rings, sunscreen, and tracking devices for their wallets.

The impact lasted well past the booth. Attendees compared mindset pairings, debated whether they got the “right” result, and pulled coworkers back over to take the quiz themselves.

Personalized Experiences

These GumGum gifting moments demonstrate that people love the opportunity to personalize their swag—whether it’s an air-brushing station that allows attendees to add their name to a tote bag or a charm bar where they can assemble their own keychain. Making the experience feel exclusive and special is a great way to impress upon attendees.

DIY Things

Other do-it-yourself activities that offer a take-home component are also a big hit! Attendees like to get their hands dirty, so to speak, which is why fun diversions like formulating their own scent or assembling a bouquet can be a surefire way to make your event even more memorable.

Sustainable Items

Of course, attendees are more mindful of their ecological footprint, especially when it comes to their presence at events, and that includes choosing giveaways that won’t wind up in the trash bin later.

We always strive to keep our swag options as Earth-friendly as possible. That means gifting ethically-sourced, durable, or zero-waste promotional items that reduce environmental impact and align with our Client’s values. Consider prioritizing reusability, minimizing packaging, and choosing verified sustainable materials like organic cotton, recycled plastics (RPET), or bamboo.

Sustainability also includes how you handle your leftover swag. If you can’t use the items for a future event, think about donating unused promotional items to shelters, schools, and local nonprofits.

Digital Gifts

Eliminate the need for physical things altogether and create a virtual swag bag that contains redeemable online coupons and gift cards. Or make a charitable donation on behalf of the attendees.

Local Goods

If it fits your event, consider sourcing locally-made products to highlight the host city or local artists and vendors. Like any good souvenir, an item that speaks to the time and place of an event can hold great meaning for attendees.

Even though the swag game is changing, it’s not going away anytime soon—because people love free stuff! But more than ever, what we give out needs to be thoughtful and intentional, so attendees walk away with a warm, fuzzy feeling about you and your event.
